Fantasy Player's Edge

May 2, 2008

The Player's Edge welcomes your comments and will try
to answer questions in the context of the narrative.

Roster Shuffle:

Jimmy Rollins may not be activated on Monday when
he's eligible to come off the DL. He still feels discomfort
when he runs the bases.

Troy Tulowitzki is heading to the DL for months with a
torn tendon in his quad. Grab an extended spot player
such as Yuniesky Betancourt to ease your pain.

B.J. Upton left yesterday's Rays game clutching his shoulder
after a swinging foul ball. He says it looks worse than it is.
He's sitting today but could play on Saturday.

Moises Alou is expected to be activated today. He's an
excellent spot play should Upton be unavailable for a
few days.

Jeff Clement will be starting again today for Johjima.
They want Kenji to take a "mental" break. I kid you
not. I wonder if Johjima's ever heard of Wally Pipp.

"China" Kendricks will not be activated today as
expected.

Alphonso Soriano returned to the Cubs and assumed
the lead off spot, albeit, unsuccessfully.

Ty Wigginton was activated and could provide bench
depth as he's eligible at 1b, 2B and 3B.

Justin Duchscherer was on a strict pitch count last
night vs. the Halo's. He earned the victory with an
81 pitch, 5 inning, 1 earned, 7 whip, 6 k outing. He's
worth a flyer if you're SP light.

Randy Wolf is another to consider if you need SP.
Homey is off to grandma's house with a 2-1, 3.57/1.13
and 37 k's in 35 frames.

Top prospect Nick Adenhart got a rude welcome to the
Bigs from the juggernaut in Oakland. The A's are hardly
imposing which does not bode well for Nick the Quick. He
might rapidly descend back to the Trips but let's not toss
too much dirt on him just yet. It's worth watching as he
will get at least one more start.

Waterford Harden threw 50 pitches, 38 strikes and jugged
it at 95 mph's vs the Triple A's last night. Listen the guy
can dish he's just very, very, very fragile.

Phil Hughes has been pitching with a stress fracture in
his rib which explains the stress he caused his owners
this season. He's expected to return in July. Can you
hear the Jobarrettes chanting in the wings?

Speaking of the Joballero's, Ian Kennedy was dismal
again running his season to 1-2, 8.37/2.03. Lame Jones
can't dance, it's Joba time or Hank's going to bust a cap
in Cashman's behind.

Streamers: (tomorrow's probable starters available as free agents)

Use these players to gain advantage in wins and strikeouts.

John Danks- although he's rarely seen one, noted bird watcher
Danks is an authority on the hitting habits of the Canadian Blue
Jay. 0-0, 1.80/1.40 with 4 k's in 5 frames.

Aaron Laffey-ROTFLaffey at the sight of the Royalsmen of K.C.
2-1, 3.63/1.33 with 9 k's over 17 innings.

Spotties: (tomorrow's position players available as free agents)

Use these players to fill in for injured players and on off days.

Casey Blake- once starred as Colonel Blake on M.E.C.H.E. It
was back in the day. 11/23 with 2 clouts.

Luis Gonzalez- has Peavy's private number and dials in frequently.
18/53, 9 extras, 4 jacarandas, 12 ribbies and 2 steals for good measure.

playing the Astros and Oswalt. 13/37, 5 extras, a homer and 5 rbi.

Normally sit these players in Roto formats only.

Bobby Abreu (sit)- bedazzled by Bedard. 3/17, 4 k's.

Has no answer for action Jackson. 1/9, 4 k's.

Strategy: Scherzer, as expected, went to another owner.
However the PE is now a # 3 priority in the Clayton Kershaw
derby. Giddyup. An unexpected probable Ted Lilly was added
for Hendrickson this morning for a Saturday start. Lilly is 3-2,
2.93/1.08 with 28 k's over 40 innings vs. the Cards. PE now has
6 starts vs. OP's 4. The Hendrickson start is worrisome today but
he's active at the moment. Maine starts for OP tonight on the road
in Arizona. He's lights out vs. the D'Backs but sometimes struggles
away from home. The worry is Maine will go low whip while
Hendrickson yields 9-10 whip over 5-6 innings. OP closes out the
weekend with Lohse and Myers on Saturday and his highness
Santana on Sunday. PE only has a 6 k lead week to date.
Hendrickson will probably be used as WINS still stand at 1-0.

Game Keys: Kerry Wood's blow up put both era and whip firmly
in play. He did cost the OP's Zambrano a win so there was a bit
of a silver lining in Wood's dismal performance. Saito's save offset
Betancourt's blown save to give PE a 3-2 lead in this category. OP
stroked on offense going 11/31 while PE lagged at 7/25. PE had 2
more steals and has salted away the point at 7-1. Heading into
tonight's action the PE holds a tenuous 8-2 advantage with every
category in play except for STEALS and RBI where PE leads by 10.
RBI is not a lock with 3 playing days remaining but the OP will need
to start gaining in this category tonight to have a realistic chance of
playing for this point. Both offenses are all in with PE having 3
starters and 4 closers to OP's 1 starter and 3 closers.

Final Thoughts:

The Player's Edge enters many leagues every season. Please
extend your gracious invitation in January of 2009 as that's when
the Edge will complete its dance card for the upcoming season.
Muchas gracias amigo.

The Player's Edge participates in many leagues but elected to
follow a team in a Public League to better approximate what might
be faced by a wide majority of players that use the Edge daily. This
team plays in a standard 5x5 scoring format and drafted 7th of 12
teams in a 21 round on-line live event in late March. We'll follow this
team throughout the entire 2008 fantasy campaign.

PE is in 4th place, 6.5 games out of 1st and 3 games behind the
3rd place team heading into week 5.

All Done!
