Fantasy Player's Edge

May 7, 2008

The Player's Edge welcomes your comments and will try
to answer questions in the context of the narrative.

Roster Shuffle:

Drum roll please!!!!!!!!! Jimmy Rollins has pronounced himself
ready to J-Roll. He's in a bit of a tug-o-war with the Phillies
brass as to "when" as management would like him to stay in
Florida for another day or two. Jimmy says he's bought his
plane ticket to Arizona. Stay tuned.

A-Rod will test his quad today to see if he can rejoin the
Yankees on the 13th when he's eligible.

Chone Figgins was cleared to begin running yesterday and
barring a setback expects to return on Friday against the
Rays.

There has been a China Kendricks sighting. He turned up
at Rancho Cucamonga for another rehab start and is also
expected to return to the Halo's over the weekend in Tampa.

Aramis Ramirez is still struggling with his swing due to a
swollen wrist. He returned to the starting lineup even
though he's not 100%, going 1/3, run, rbi.

Victor Martinez sat out last night due to a stiff neck. Keep
an eye on this as it might also affect V-Mart's AB's at DH.

Carlos Beltran couldn't go due to the flu. He pinch hit which
suggests he should play today. East Coast players catch a
break as the Dodgers and Mets play a day game in LA.
Check the box for Carlos' availability at about 2:15 EST.

Rafael Furcal sat as well in the same game with a balky
back. Innuendo has it that he'll also miss this afternoon's
tilt. Drop in to make certain that he's sitting.

Orlando Hudson, on the other side of the same thing,
seems to be headed to the DL. He's off to get an MRI
on his hammy. Adjust accordingly.

Garret Anderson is heating up and could provide help in
every "O" category with the exception of steals.

255. That's the number of innings used that would
keep you on track to deploy maximum innings (1250)
over the course of the season in Rotisserie. A number
significantly above or below should be a call to action.

Barry Zito is a surprise starter today against the Pirates.
Is $18 million a tad too much to pay for mediocre middle
relief?

Ned Yost categorized the talk of demoting closer Eric
Gagne as ridiculous. That's manager-speak for who the
hell do we have in the bullpen to replace this inconsistent
maniac.

Speaking of closers and ridiculous in the same sentence,
Joe Borowski is on track to return next week.

Rafael Soriano's elbow has not improved and is getting
an MRI to see if they can identify the problem. With
Smoltz assuming the closing role for Atlanta, Soriano's
value is nil.

Scott Olsen, Justin Duchsherer, Jair Jurrjens and Gavin
Floyd were all better than good last night. Evaluate your
staff today while prime SP's are still there for the taking.

The Edge has filed a formal protest with MLB after
learning that the Orioles might release Steve Trachsel.
It was bad enough when spot play machine Matt Morris
was cast adrift by the Pirates but the Spotties segment
needs Steve Trachsel to be starting every 5th day. It's
the very least that the Orioles and MLB can do for the
fantasy community.

Streamers: (tomorrow's probable starters available as free agents)

Use these players to gain advantage in wins and strikeouts.

Daniel Cabrera- "he's goin' Kansas City, Kansas City here he comes.
They've got some crazy little hitters and Danny gonna get him some"
3-0, 2.57/1.43 with 26 k's over 35 innings. He's whip risky but if you
need a win and k's he's a decent start.

Paul Maholm- the Beowulf of PNC Park has been summoned to slay
the Giants once again. 1-0, 2.40/1.00 with 11 k's in 15 frames.

Spotties: (tomorrow's position players available as free agents)

Use these players to fill in for injured players and on off days.

Scott Podsednik- mild mannered Scotty has been known to "loathe
Lohse" and can say it 3 times fast. 8/21, 4 mults, 3 rbi, a swipe with
only 1 k.

Michael Cuddyer- Cuddy's ark visits U.S. Cellular Field and is certain
to bring sweetness and light to the Dank(s) old ball yard. Heck, he
may even give Ozzie a hug. 5/8 against Danks.

Start/Sit: (today)

Guide to using bench players when matchups are favorable.

Jerad Weaver (start)- the Royals are the best medicine for what
ails Weaver. 2-3, 1.93/1.19 with 25 k's in 33 innings.

Orlando Cabrera (start)- Uncle Livan pays the Little "O" a visit
in Chi-town. He'll keep his nephew above the Mendoza line.
10/22, 2 extras, a steal with only 1 k.

Guide to sit starters when matchups are unfavorable.

Normally sit these players in Roto formats only.

John Maine (sit)- simply cannot understand why Randolph
insists he pitch in Los Angeles. 0-3, 5.06/1.75 compounded
by the fact that he struggles a bit on the road.

Brad Penny (sit)- feels the same way about facing the Mets
at home. 5-11, 5.66/1.49 through 111 innings. Torre and
Willy should ante up a few bucks and send both of these
guys to the movies.

Studs and Duds: (a recap of yesterday's picks and pans)

Justin Duchsherer (stream)- W 7ip/2e/6w/4k

Jeff Suppan(stream)- L 5ip/3e/11w/5k

Richie Sexson (spot)- 0/4

Julio Lugo (spot)- 1/3

Ken Griffey (start)- 2/4

Andruw Jones (start)- 1/4

Carlos Guillen (sit)- 1/4

Placido Polanco (sit)- 0/4

Daily Activity:

PE Smith(drop)/DeJesus-Sun
PE DeJesus(drop)/Lewis-Mon
PE Lewis(drop)/Cuddyer-Tues
PE Betancourt(drop)/Verlander-Wed

Strategy: Verlander was added to the rotation via a priority
waiver claim giving the PE an extra start as Verlander works
on Thursday vs. the Red Sox. Betancourt remains on the roster
one more day and did register a save yesterday. Unfortunately
Lewis had to be dropped for Cuddyer. The Giants seem to be
platooning the speedster sitting him against lefties. The Pirates
have lefties going through Thursday. Cuddyer faces Buehrle
(20/63) and Danks (5/8) today and tomorrow and hits both
solidly. No additional moves are anticipated for today.

Game Keys: Each club has now used 2 SP's on their first starts
of a 2 start week with the advantage going to PE. Although PE's
Harang and Hill could not generate a win they clearly outpitched
Batista and Bonderman heading into Wednesday. Batista was
awful allowing 6 earned on 9 whip in 2.1 innings. OP's offense
was equally as dreadful going 1/21 bringing the OP weekly total
to 4/44, .091. With that said PE is deeply concerned as they lead
Runs by only 2 and are tied in Homers and RBI. OP is not going
to bat sub .100 throughout the week so PE bats will have to come
alive or risk 3 points or more on offense. OP sends Buehrle vs.
Weaver and Buchholz today. Each team will have 6 turns
thereafter. PE closers registered 3 saves last night to 1 for OP.

^ -designates an active player on today's roster.

Final Thoughts:

PE is in 5th place, 8.5 games out of 1st and 2 games behind the
2nd place team heading into week 6.

The Player's Edge participates in many leagues but elected to
follow a team in a Public League to better approximate what might
be faced by a wide majority of players that use the Edge daily. This
team plays in a standard 5x5 scoring format and drafted 7th of 12
teams in a 21 round on-line live event in late March. We'll follow this
team throughout the entire 2008 fantasy campaign.

All Done!
