Fantasy Player's Edge

May 3, 2008

The Player's Edge welcomes your comments and will try
to answer questions in the context of the narrative.

Roster Shuffle:

Unexpectedly Yovani Gallardo was lost for the season due
to a torn ACL. Take 30 seconds to mourn and then drop him
for Jurrjens, Galarraga, Sanchez or oldies Dempster or Wolf.
Hustle up, the show must go on.

Big Zambrano rubbed up a blister on one those sausages he
calls fingers. It doesn't seem like much but it could cost him
a start of two as the season wears on.

John Lackey will toss a 3rd rehab start last night against a group
of Single A's. He could return by the 12th. Mark it down so you
activate on time.

The wailing that you're hearing in the fantasy night is coming
from Rafael Soriano owners as Bobby Cox has all but anointed
Smoltz his closer when he returns to the team. There's no rush
to drop Soriano unless another closer is available immediately
or you're streaming into Sunday.

Joe Torre has advised that phenom Clayton Kershaw will be
relegated to the bullpen to limit his innings. This was the exact
rhetoric that came from Bob Melvin before Scherzer retired 13
in a row with 7 strikeouts in his 1st appearance. Max starts on
Monday.

For the 2 of you who have Wandy Rodriguez on your DL, he's
still not ready to throw. You might want to let him go.

How sweet is J-Roll. He told his mama that he'd be playing on
Mother's Day in San Francisco. Actually there's some noise about
him being back on Thursday but his status is top, top, top secret.

Paulie "Cashews" Konerko is still riding the pine. He's day to day
so check the ChiSox lineup about noon EST today.

Coco Crisp has a sore left knee opening the door for the return
of Jacoby Ellsbury. It's seems like these two have been taking
turns being dinged so that the other can get a few starts. How
noble. Now Elz needs to assert himself before Drew returns so
that Coco can platoon with JD when he gets back.

Carlos Gomez got head popped by I-Rod on a steal attempt. He
was carted off but he's good to go. You should verify that he's
going to be active today.

The Hammer became the nail as Josh Willingham was placed on
the DL with a sore neck. Depending on your needs you can spot
play Alou for pop or Lewis for speed.

Papi has a bum knee as it never really got better. The prevailing
wisdom is that he'll play in pain for the remainder of the season.

Jorge Posada is going to be out for a minimum of 5 weeks. It might
be prudent to cast him off as he'll be dealing with this shoulder issue
all season. Paul LoDuca was activated and is an okay plug in at C.

Dmitri Young's pilgrimage to a masseuse was miraculous. She
put her hands to work on that ample hind quarter and released
the chronic pain in his back. He's off to extended spring training.
Go figure.

Phil Hughes will be wearing glasses when he returns in July. So
while he was dealing with a broken rib he also was visually
impaired. What in the world does Yankees medical staff do on
a daily basis?

Streamers: (tomorrow's probable starters available as free agents)

Use these players to gain advantage in wins and strikeouts.

Greg Smith- it won't always be this way but Smitty is having a real
solid first pass through the league. He's home and has no history
vs. the Rangers who will be starting career reliever Feldman. This
guy sounds more like a stand up comic than a pitcher, advantage
Smith. 2-1, 2.73/1.06, with 21 k's in 33 innings on the season.

Jason Marquis- is back in the hood against his old homey's. No
respect for Crips, Bloods, Latin Kings or Cards.. 4-1, 3.27/1.33
over 33 frames

Spotties: (tomorrow's position players available as free agents)

Use these players to fill in for injured players and on off days.

Joey Gathright- motors into Cleveland rarin' to drive this Carmona.
7/15 with a swipe.

Luis Gonzalez- ya just gotta check out this stat line vs. Maddox.
35/110, 16 extras, 10 jacks, 22 rbi with only 11 k's. He's a
Tyrannosaurus Rex to Greg's Taradactal.

Start/Sit
: (today)

Guide to using bench players when matchups are favorable.

Ted Lilly (start)- this gilded Lilly will gloriously blossom in St. Louis.
3-2, 2.93/1.08 with a respectable 28 k's over 40 innings.

Ryan Garko (start)- the Gark has been suffering from batting anemia.
Mom's has cooked up a savory Meche to nurse the Ry-guy back to
health. 5/11 with 2 roundtrippers.

Guide to sit starters when matchups are unfavorable.

Normally sit these players in Roto formats only.

Matt Cain (sit)- the night they drove ole' Matty down
and the Phillies were singin', na na na na na na na na.
0-2, 9.69/2.23 over 13 innings vs. Phils and he's on
the road.

Kevin Youkilis (sit)- simply has no defense for this guy,
or offense for that matter. He's the first to ever make the
sit list 3 days running. 0/13 with 5 k's vs. Shields.

Studs and Duds
: ( a recap of yesterday's picks and pans)

Mark Hendrickson (stream)- W 7ip/3e/6w/2k

Carlos Villanueva (stream)- L 5ip/6e/9w/4k

Coco Crisp (spot)- DNP-injured

Ben Broussard (spot)- 0/4

Todd Helton (start)- 1/4, solo homer

Bill Hall (start)- 1/3

PE Soriano(drop)/G. Smith-Sat

Strategy: Matt Cain is a solid starter but will be benched tonight
against Phillies on the road. See today's Sit for details. PE waived
R. Soriano for Greg Smith should he be needed to counter Santana
tomorrow. Smoltz will takeover the closer role as soon as he returns
to the Braves. The play is straightforward from here with today's
action determining whether Smith spots tomorrow to protect K's
and Wins.

Game Keys: PE's offense was dreadful going 7/39 allowing the OP
to regain control of that point. Otherwise status quo was maintained
with PE sewing up RBI and Steals. The count favors PE 7-2 with
Saves even. Both squads have 2 SP's and a full compliment on
offense. The closers are 3-2 PE as both teams have closers matched
up. OP has Sherrill and K-Rod while PE has Saito and Fuentes. Every
point is up for grabs except RBI and SB as play crosses the river into
the turn.

Final Thoughts:

The Player's Edge enters many leagues every season. Please
extend your gracious invitation in January of 2009 as that's when
the Edge will complete its dance card for the upcoming season.
Muchas gracias amigo.

The Player's Edge participates in many leagues but elected to
follow a team in a Public League to better approximate what might
be faced by a wide majority of players that use the Edge daily. This
team plays in a standard 5x5 scoring format and drafted 7th of 12
teams in a 21 round on-line live event in late March. We'll follow this
team throughout the entire 2008 fantasy campaign.

PE is in 4th place, 6.5 games out of 1st and 3 games behind the
3rd place team heading into week 5.

All Done!
