Fantasy Player's Edge

June 8, 2008

Roster Shuffle:

Vernon Wells was a surprise activation by the Blue
Jays from the DL. He went 2/3 with an rbi.

Aaron Hill was added to the DL retroactive to May
30th to make room for Wells. He's dealing with a
concussion.

Troy Tulowitzki will be rehabbing next week and is
likely to return to the Rockies by the weekend.

Rafael Furcal is targeting June 17th as his return to
the Dodgers lineup. He'll have a rehab assignment
in the minors to test the condition of his lower back.

It appears that Chone Figgins will begin a rehab gig
tomorrow at Triple A Salt Lake. There's a chance
that he could return by the weekend.

Victor Martinez sat out yesterday. It seems that V-
Mart is going to take regular days off perhaps in
deference to a balky knee.

Matt Holliday will rejoin the Rockies on Tuesday.

Edwin Encanaracion sat out with a sore left elbow
after getting hit by a pitch Friday night. He's day
to day.

Ryan Church missed his 3rd game out of the last
4 with the after effects of a concussion. Owners
should check the Mets box daily before using him.

Jake Peavy could return to the Padres rotation on
Thursday vs. the Dodgers.

Johan Santana has a sore left shoulder after being
hit by a pitch on a bunt attempt. There's no word
on whether he'll miss his next turn.

Adam Wainwright was forced to leave the game
with a sprained finger on his throwing hand. The
extent of the injury is unknown.

Daisuke Matsuzaka has been cleared to begin a
throwing program. He'll need a bullpen session
or two and perhaps a rehab start at Pawtucket
before returning to the BoSox rotation. He's
eligible to be activated from the DL on June 12th.

Eric Gagne is still throwing off flat ground trying
to regain strength in his shoulder. He's not close
to returning.

Rafael Soriano will not pitch again today as he's
suffering from elbow tendonitis. It's likely that
he'll have this issue all season and at some point
will be shutdown. Mike Gonzalez is almost ready
and should be acquired by Soriano owners as
insurance.

Jason Isringhausen will begin a rehab assignment
on Thursday. If he makes 3 appearances in Triple
A he would return to the Cards bullpen around the
17th. It's unclear what role he will occupy when he
returns.

Jason Schmidt had a successful 50 pitch bullpen
stint on Thursday but his rehab start was pushed
back due to a minor discomfort in his shoulder. If
he can stay on course the prevailing thought is that
he would join the Dodgers around the All Star break.

Scot Shields was still on the shelf with tightness on
his left side. He had a negative x-ray so he might be
available to pitch today.

Jeremy Bonderman may be done for the year after
a battery of medical tests revealed he has a blood clot
of the axillary vein which is causing circulation issues.
Dontrelle Willis will probably fill Bondy's spot in the
rotation.

Streamers: (tomorrow's probable starters available as free agents)

Use these players to gain advantage in wins and strikeouts.

Glen Perkins- with the exception of his last start against
the Yankees, Perkins has pitched well. 0-0, 2.70/.90 with
6 k's in 7 innings vs. the ChiSox.

Mike Mussina- has already scored 9 wins on the season and
is still available in many leagues. He gets his 10th today at
Yankees Stadium. 17-7, 2.91/1.10 in 232 innings against K.C.

Spotties: (tomorrow's position players available as free agents)

Use these players to fill in for injured players and on off days.

Jerry Hairston Jr.- is a burr in the saddle of big Hendrickson.
7/15 with 2 steals.

Brandon Inge- will very likely stagger Lee. 9/23, a homer and
5 rbi against the Indians lefty.

Start/Sit
: (today)

Guide to using bench players when matchups are favorable.

Jeff Kent (start)- gets good hacks against Marquis. 8/19, 3 extras
and 3 rbi.

Kevin Youkilis (start)- won't have any reason to aggravate Manny
with thrown equipment in the dugout. 5/10 with a couple of extra
base knocks versus Washburn.

Guide to sit starters when matchups are unfavorable.

Normally sit these players in Roto formats only.

Bobby Crosby (sit)- has no answer for anything that Ervin
Santana offers. 0/13 with 3k's.

Vlad Guerrero (sit)- never seems to got a solid piece of Rich
Harden's stuff. 4/21 with only 2 k's.

Studs and Duds: (a recap of yesterday's picks and pans)

Shaun Hill (stream)- L 7.1ip/2e/8w/2k

Dave Bush (stream)- L 4ip/5e/7w/3k

Jose Lopez (spot)- 0/3

Craig Monroe (spot)- 1/3, run

Andre Ethier (start)- 2/4, run

Orlando Cabrera (start)- 1/4, 2 rbi

Adrian Beltre (sit)- 0/3

Carlos Lee (sit)- 0/1, pinch hit

Strategy: OP SP's had 3 W's by 9pm so Sanchez was used
last night for Gavin Floyd to give PE 5 SP's today in an effort
to take the point in W's. Justin Masterson and Floyd were
released for Cuddyer and Sanchez (again) for Monday which
will allow PE to start 6 potential bats. PE has 9 starts on the
roster for week 11.

Week 11 marks the mid-point of the season and this week's
OP features Hanley Ramirez, Guerrero, Carlos Lee, Mauer
and Ian Kinsler on offense with a rotation of Halladay, Scott
Olsen, Owings, Jurrjens and Joba Chamberlain. Hoffman,
Soria and Brian Wilson comprise a formidable trio of closers
for OP. OP has 6 starts on the roster and will field 8 players
on offense for Monday.

Game Keys: OP's move to bench Ichiro for Jose Guillen
paid dividends as Guillen cracked 2 homeruns, drove in
7 while going 3/4. OP SP's were incredible racking up 3
wins with only 10 earned and 32 whip in 25.1 innings to
tie the point and virtually lock up ERA/WHIP. OP offense
finished with 3 homers, 8 runs and 11 rbi for the day. PE
offense hit well going 11/35 but could only manage 4 runs,
6 rbi and a 1 homer. PE streamers Hill and Bush were not
able to secure a win. Heading into today's finale the teams
are playing for PE points in Runs and BA. OP leads HR by
2 while PE holds the edge in SB by 4. PE is sending 5 SP's
to try and break the tie in W's. OP has no SP's today. The
match stands at 5-4 PE. The best outcome PE could have
would be to take W's and hold sway in all other categories
to escape with a 6-4 verdict.

Final Thoughts:

Even with an 8-2 victory in week 9 PE fell to 3rd place 4
games out of 1st and 1.5 out of second place heading into
week 10. PE is 31-9 over last 4 weeks.

The Player's Edge participates in many leagues but elected to
follow a team in a Public League to better approximate what might
be faced by a wide majority of players that use the Edge daily. This
team plays in a standard 5x5 scoring format and drafted 7th of 12
teams in a 21 round on-line live event in late March. We'll follow this
team throughout the entire 2008 fantasy campaign.
