Fantasy Player's Edge

June 18, 2008

Roster Shuffle
:

Fausto Carmona's rehab assignment is on hold due to the
soreness he felt in his hip after throwing 50 pitches in a
simulated game.

Brad Penny went on the DL with tendonitis in his shoulder.

Todd Wellemeyer will skip a turn on Thursday. He has an
irritation in his right elbow causing significant discomfort.

Mike Gonzalez should be activated and join the Braves pen
today, ostensibly as a closer.

Hiroki Kuroda was sent back to LA for an MRI on his sore
shoulder. He's likely to be added to the Dodgers growing
list of disabled starters.

Rafael Furcal's return in now projected to be around the
All Star break which is July 14-16. He's suffering with
lower back issues.

Travis Hafner is visiting renowned orthopedic Dr. James
Andrews looking for answers to assist with his shoulder
rehab. Simply stated nothing that the Indians have done
to date have helped Big Pronk get better.

Paul Konerko was added to the DL with a strained oblique.

Kevin Youkilis is trying to get back in the Red Sox lineup
as he deals with back spasms. With the team off tomorrow
it's likely he'll sit until Friday. Check the box today to be
certain one way of the other.

Milton Bradley left his game last night with an apparent
leg injury. The details of the extent of the problem will
be available today.

Ken Griffey and Jason Bay sat out with illness. Look for
both to return today.

Jose Reyes tweaked a hamstring last night but vows to
return today. It's not likely that they'll gamble with his
legs so anticipate that he'll sit tonight as a precaution.
Check the Mets lineup this evening to make sure he's
on the bench.

Hank Blalock's rehab has been delayed once again as his
wrists are still not right.

Chase Headley made his major league debut last night at
Yankees Stadium going a quiet 2/4. He should be a useful
#3 OF/Util if your team has that need.

Interleague play continues next week. Plan for it as DH's
for the Red Sox, Toronto, Cleveland, Detroit, Kansas City
and the A's could miss some or all of the early week's action.
With Ortiz out and the other clubs not having a fantasy
stud at DH the impact of mixed league play should be
minimal on fantasy offenses.

Streamers
: (tomorrow's probable starters available as free agents)

Use these players to gain advantage in wins and strikeouts.

Gavin Floyd- had some success against the Pirates during
his stay with the Phillies. He's been virtually untouchable
at home this season. 1-0 1.38/1.65 in 7 innings vs. the
Bucs and 4-1, 2.82/.88 over 51 innings at home this year.

Doug Davis- has a fabulous track record vs. Oakland as he
faced them often during his tenures with Texas and Toronto.
6-1, 3.19/1.25 with 37 k's in 42 frames.

Spotties: (tomorrow's position players available as free agents)

Use these players to fill in for injured players and on off days.

David Eckstein- saw plenty of Dave Bush in his National
League days. 7/16 with 3 steals.

Mike Cameron- see Burnett, hit Burnett. 4/11, 4 extras,
a bomb, 4 rbi and a steal vs. A.J.

Start/Sit
: (today)

Guide to using bench players when matchups are favorable.

Placido Polanco (start)- constantly has Zito on the ropes.
Doesn't everyone? 7/11 with 0 k's.

James Loney (start)- has had solid AB's vs. Arroyo in
his brief career. 5/9 with an extra base hit.

Guide to sit starters when matchups are unfavorable.

Normally sit these players in Roto formats only

Magglio Ordonez (sit)- It was like searching for the Golden
Fleece but the Edge has found a hitter that struggles with
Zito. 3/23, with 3 k's.

Scott Rolen (sit)- Sheets is real good but Rolen makes him
even better. 8/45 with 9 k's.

Studs and Duds: (a recap of yesterday's picks and pans)

Garrett Olsen (stream)- ND 4.2ip/4e/7w/4k

Jonathan Sanchez (stream)- L 7ip/3e/9w/8k

Julio Lugo (spot)- 1/3, run, stolen base

Rich Aurilia (spot)- 2/4

Todd Helton (start)- 1/4

Ken Griffey (start)- 0/1 pinch hit, DNS-illness

Vlad Guerrero (sit)- 2/4, 2 runs

Ray Durham (sit)- 1/3

^ -designates an active player on today's roster.

Daily Activity:

PE Gomez(drop)/Olson-Mon
PE Olson(drop)/Rasner-Tues
PE Rasner(drop)/Davis-Wed

Strategy: Darrell Rasner was dropped to make room for
Doug Davis on Thursday. PE has elected to continue with
a streaming strategy as OP leads in both W's and K's. OP
sends Oliver Perez/Marcum against PE stream Rasner
today but PE will send 3 SP's tomorrow vs 0 SP's for OP.
PE leads 2-0 in saves in part due to spot closer Morrow.
PE will continue to use 5 closers which will prohibit a
stream on Friday when PE has 2 SP's active. Morrow is
off on Thursday which permitted the use of 3 SP's. Both
teams have the potential for 9 starters on offense today.
PE will have a 7-6 advantage tomorrow on offense.

Game Keys: Billingsley was outstanding for OP pitching
6.1 innings with 1 earned and 9 k's to earn a W. He did
allow 8 whip and coupled with 5 more whip from 2 OP
closers allowed PE to take subtle control of the point. PE
had 2 saves and 4 k's from 2 closers. PE streamer Olson
was ineffective but not destructive in any category. OP
ERA is a miniscule 1.93 presently and Oliver Perez and
Marcum are perfectly capable of 2 W's with low era/whip
totals. Braun hit 2 bombs and plated 3 to help PE tie RBI
and trail by only 1 in Runs and HR's. OP leads 6-2 with
every point in play.

Final Thoughts:

PE remains in 3rd place 4.5 points out of 1st and 1 out of
2nd place with the regular season half over.

The Player's Edge participates in many leagues but elected to
follow a team in a Public League to better approximate what might
be faced by a wide majority of players that use the Edge daily. This
team plays in a standard 5x5 scoring format and drafted 7th of 12
teams in a 21 round on-line live event in late March. We'll follow this
team throughout the entire 2008 fantasy campaign.
