Fantasy Player's Edge

June 14, 2008

Roster Shuffle:

Chipper Jones had a ball ricochet off the batting cage and
hit him in the eye during BP last night. He was held out of
last night's game but should return today.

Chone Figgins returned going 1/2 with a caught stealing.
That's a good sign, even though he was thrown out, that
the hamstring has healed.

Speaking of hamstrings, Manny Ramirez left in the 7th
inning with a sore right hamstring. Without a DH he's
certain to miss a few games. Adjust accordingly.

Edgar Renteria sat out with sore ribs. The extent of his
injury is unknown so check the Tigers box today at about
3pm EST to see if he's playing.

Michael Cuddyer is day to day after being hit on the hand
by a pitch. X-Rays were negative.

Troy Tulowitzki is feeling great about being back sooner
than expected and is targeting next Friday for his return
to the Rockies.

Surprise!!! Moises Alou is on the DL again with a strained
calf.

Rafael Soriano will be visiting Dr. Lewis Yocum while the
Braves are in Anaheim. Dr. Yocum performed Soriano's
Tommy John surgery and Soriano is hopeful that Yocum
may be able to isolate the cause of the chronic soreness
in his elbow. Expect the Braves to fast track lefty Mike
Gonzalez who's had a couple of good rehab outings.

J.J. Putz has been placed on the DL leaving Brandon
Morrow with the Mariners closing gig.

Daisuke Matsuzaka will pitch in Pawtucket on Monday.
He's expected to throw about 80 pitches and is targeting
Saturday the 21st to return to the Red Sox rotation.

Mad Max Scherzer was optioned to Triple A Tucson.
He'll probably be recalled if a starting spot opens up
because of injury or ineffectiveness but otherwise he
should be back for D'Backs the stretch run post Labor
Day.

Interleague play continues next week. Plan for it as DH's
for the Red Sox, Toronto, Cleveland, Detroit, Kansas City
and the A's could miss some or all of the weekend's action.
With Ortiz out and the other clubs not having a fantasy
stud at DH the impact of mixed league play should be
minimal on fantasy offenses. With that said, Youkilis
owners were shortchanged last night as Tito Francona
elected to go with Casey at 1B leaving Youk the odd
man out. Damon also sat out last night.

Strategy: OP Joba Chamberlain opened the door slightly
for PE in K/WHIP going 6 innings allowing 10 whip and
fanning only 2. OP has Halladay on the bump today in an
early start. PE will wait for the outcome before deciding on
activating Rich Harden tonight against the Giants. PE leads
by 16 k's so Halladay's strikeout totals will determine PE's
ultimate SP strategy. There is an inherent risk to ERA and
WHIP by keeping 5 closers active, especially, with the point
barely in play but it's a calculated gamble that will grade out
today. OP leads by 4 in the category and unless PE closes
the gap appreciably today the strategy will be abandoned.
PE will replace Griffey with Kemp consistent with the plan
to play for the SB point. Figgins will not be activated this
week unless there is an injury to an offensive starter today.

Game Keys: Joba Chamberlain was solid last night for OP
but allowed PE a bit of breathing room in K/WHIP. SB point
now resides with PE thanks to "spottie" Juan Pierre's swipe
last night. PE got a save from Cordero but it might be much
too little much too late as PE trails by 4. The game heads onto
the river all even at 5-5. SB, ERA, WHIP, K and Saves, to one
extent or another, are on the table. The pitching points could
be decided by today.

Final Thoughts:

PE remains in 3rd place 6 points out of 1st and 1.5 out of 2nd place
heading into week 11 which is the midway mark of the 2008 Head
to Head regular season.

The Player's Edge participates in many leagues but elected to
follow a team in a Public League to better approximate what might
be faced by a wide majority of players that use the Edge daily. This
team plays in a standard 5x5 scoring format and drafted 7th of 12
teams in a 21 round on-line live event in late March. We'll follow this
team throughout the entire 2008 fantasy campaign.
