Fantasy Player's Edge

June 7, 2008

Roster Shuffle:

James Shields(6), Coco Crisp(7) and Carl Crawford(4)
received significant suspensions for their roles in the
Boston/Tampa melee. Shields all but admitted that
he threw at Crisp so it was surprising the he only got
6 games. He'll have his next start pushed back so in
effect, he won't miss a turn. Gomes (5), Iwamura(3),
Lester(5), Edwin Jackson(5) and Casey(3) were also
suspended.

Chone Figgins will not be returning before June 13th so
his owners will have to continue without his services for
at least another week. He ran the bases without any
discomfort yesterday.

Michael Young has a break at the tip of the left ring
finger and did not play last night. Young contends
that he will be able to play with the broken finger.

As expected Jorge Posada was rested last night. The
Yankees are going to be very careful with Jorge for
several weeks before considering multiple days behind
the plate. He'll probably get a few hacks at DH along
the way.

Albert Pujols was back in the Cards lineup last night but
said that he was playing at about 40%. Okay, so math is
not his strong suit but I'm certain his owners like the odds
of winning with Pujols in the lineup.

Rick Ankiel is still bothered by an infection on his knee.
He's iffy for the weekend even though there is talk that
he might play. Check the Cards box before making a start
/sit decision.

Brad Hawpe was activated from the DL and returned to
the Rockies lineup last night going 1/2 with a 2 run homer.

Geovany Soto has a swollen finger on his left hand which
was caused by releasing his bottom hand when he swings.
He has slumped, noticeably, of late in all probability due
to the finger. He's day to day currently.

Aaron Rowand left in the 7th inning with a sore quad. The
severity of the injury is not yet known.

Jeff Keppinger is running and could DH in an extended
spring training game tomorrow. If there are no setbacks
Kepp could begin a rehab assignment early next week.
He's well ahead of schedule to return from a fractured
kneecap.

Manny Ramirez and Jacoby Ellsbury sat with minor aches
last night. Both players are day to day although Ellsbury
might be gone for a few days with a sprained wrist.

There's a good chance that David Ortiz will not require
surgery on his left wrist. His Doctor is optimistic that
Ortiz will heal properly while in the cast. He's expected
to be out for about a month.

Todd Wellemeyer had a negative MRI on his right elbow.
He'll most likely miss only one turn.

Jeremy Bonderman will probably be added to the DL with
right shoulder discomfort.

Curt Schilling had another successful bullpen session. He
threw 35 pitches from the Fenway bullpen mound which
was 10 more than the session a few days ago.

Streamers: (tomorrow's probable starters available as free agents)

Use these players to gain advantage in wins and strikeouts.

Justin Masterson- has been outstanding in his 3 starts at
Fenway. Here comes the disheveled Mariners for #4.
2-0, 2.95/1.09 with 14 k's in 18 frames.

Jason Marquis- is another of those road warrior pitchers
that fare better away from home. 2-1, 2.25/.98 in 48
innings vs. the Dodgers and 1-0, 2.25/.85 in 20 innings
at Dodgers Stadium.

Spotties: (tomorrow's position players available as free agents)

Use these players to fill in for injured players and on off days.

Freddy Sanchez- has high aspirations for his close encounter
with Doug Davis. 16/32, 6 extras, a clout and 3 rbi.

Coco Crisp- will be able to serve his suspension on a positive
note. 10/21, 6 mults, a jack, 4 ribbies and a stolen base vs.
Washburn.

Start/Sit
: (today)

Guide to using bench players when matchups are favorable.

Andre Ethier (start)- handles Zambrano rather easily. 4/9 with
an rbi.

Orlando Cabrera (start)- looks forward to facing the wily Livan
Hernandez. 10/25, 2 extras and a stolen base.

Guide to sit starters when matchups are unfavorable.

Normally sit these players in Roto formats only.

Adrian Beltre (sit)- has real issues with the flutterball. 0/14
with 3 k's against Wakefield.

Carlos Lee (sit)- this might be a case of simply being unlucky
but it is what it is. 0/13 with 0 k's vs. Wainwright.

Studs and Duds: (a recap of yesterday's picks and pans)

Jason Bergmann (stream)- L 3ip/5e/12w/0k

Randy Wolf (stream)- W 7ip/1e/9w/2k

Maicer Izturis (spot)- 1/4, solo homer

Mike Lamb (spot)- 0/3

Ian Snell (start)- L 5ip/1e/8w/9k

Willy Taveras (start)- 1/5, stolen base

Jason Bay (sit)- 1/4, rbi

Carlos Delgado (sit)- 0/1, pinch hit

Strategy: PE roster has become thug infested. Matt Kemp
and James Shields are facing significant suspensions for
fighting. Dave Bush and Shaun Hill were dropped for Justin
Masterson and Freddy Sanchez. PE needs offensive bench
depth for Sunday should any starters be rested. If OP is
unable to challenge W's with the 4 SP's today Masterson
will be let go for another offensive bench player.

Game Keys: PE offense continues to play just well enough
to stay modestly ahead in Runs and BA. Braun stole a pair
of bases to give PE the lead in that category by the same
amount. Homers remains tied while OP has the advantage
in RBI by 2. Pitching remained status quo with PE controlling
W's, Saves and K's and OP leading in ERA/WHIP. PE got a
bit of breathing room with a win and a save last night to lead
by 3 and 5 respectively. In all probability the pitching points
will be decided today. The match turns on to the river with
PE holding a precarious 6-3 lead.

Final Thoughts:

Even with an 8-2 victory in week 9 PE fell to 3rd place 4
games out of 1st and 1.5 out of second place heading into
week 10. PE is 31-9 over last 4 weeks.

The Player's Edge participates in many leagues but elected to
follow a team in a Public League to better approximate what might
be faced by a wide majority of players that use the Edge daily. This
team plays in a standard 5x5 scoring format and drafted 7th of 12
teams in a 21 round on-line live event in late March. We'll follow this
team throughout the entire 2008 fantasy campaign.
