Roster Shuffle:
Carlos Zambrano was placed on the DL by the Cubs
yesterday.
Shaun Marcum was a surprise addition to the DL
with a strained right elbow.
Roy Halladay has had no adverse effects from being
hit in the head by a line drive and will take his normal
turn in the Blue Jays rotation.
Padres pitcher Chris Young should return to the club
by the All Star break. He's scheduled to have surgery
on his nose June 30th and should be back a couple of
weeks later.
Eric Gagne will begin a rehab assignment at Triple A
Nashville on Tuesday. He'll make 2 appearances and
rejoin the Brewers in Minnesota over the weekend.
Yost has maintained that Gagne will be a set up man.
Todd Wellemeyer had a successful 40 pitch bullpen
session and believes that he'll be able to take a turn
in the Cards rotation on Thursday.
Eric Bedard is day to day as he's feeling much better
after being forced out of his last start with back spasms.
Brandon Morrow will meet up with the Mariners in New
York on Monday as Seattle visits the Mets. Morrow has
been dealing with back spasms. He'll assume the closer
role until Putz returns.
Albert Pujols is recovering nicely from a calf strain and
is expected to be activated on Thursday when eligible
to come off the DL.
Chase Utley was given the night off in the midst of an
0/23 slump. He'll back today.
Milton Bradley is hoping to avoid a stint on the DL after
missing his 4th consecutive game with a sore quad.
Adrian Beltre was a late scratch with a bruised left index
finger. There's been no update regarding the extent or
severity of the injury.
Mark Reynolds hobbled from last night's game after fouling
a ball off his foot. He's certain to miss today's game at the
minimum, so adjust accordingly.
Ryan Church will start a rehab assignment next week
at Single A Brooklyn. He'll play a game or 2 and then
rejoin the Mets.
Josh Willingham is returning to the Marlins lineup on
Tuesday. He was hitting well in April before being
disabled and could provide help at OF/Util if he's
available in free agency.
Eric Byrnes should return to the D-Back's lineup on
Monday. If he gets off to a good start you might want
to consider selling high as he's dealing with small tears
in both hamstrings.
Andruw Jones took BP and should return to the club
around the All Star break.
Rafael Furcal disagrees with Joe Torre and says that
he'll be back before the break.
Nomar Garciaparra has been shutdown from all baseball
activities for at least 10 days. It's unlikely that Nomar
will be able to remain healthy enough for long enough
to have any kind of fantasy impact this season.
Interleague play continues next week. Plan for it as DH's
for Baltimore, Seattle, Texas, Tampa Bay, Minnesota, the
Yankees, the Angels and the White Sox could miss some
or all of the early week action. Thome, Damon, Matsui
and Giambi owners and spot players Floyd, Vidro, Huff
and Matthews could be adversely impacted.
Streamers: (tomorrow's probable starters available as free agents)
Use these players to gain advantage in wins and strikeouts.
JoJo Reyes- has really come into his own of late especially
on the road. He faces a good hitting Milwaukee team at
Turner Field so proceed with caution. 0-1, 2.92/.89 with
11 k's in 12 innings vs. the Brew Crew.
Jeff Francis- was dropped by many owners after a horrific
start to the season. 2-1, 2.88/1.16 in 25 innings over his
last 4 starts. 1-0, 1.88/.98 with 12 k's in 14 frames against
the Royals.
Spotties: (tomorrow's position players available as free agents)
Use these players to fill in for injured players and on off days.
Sean Casey- rings up Dan Haren frequently. 5/13 with 2
extras.
Dmitri Young- Meathook has had a bit of success against
Lackey. 3/9 with an extra base knock.
Start/Sit: (today)
Guide to using bench players when matchups are favorable.
Ken Griffey(start)- really hits southpaw Andy Pettitte
with authority. 17/48, 5 extras, 2 bombs and 6 rbi.
Aaron Rowand (start)- limited swings vs. Kyle Davies
but the ones he's had have been good. 3/6 with 2 mults.
Guide to sit starters when matchups are unfavorable.
Normally sit these players in Roto formats only
Jeff Kent (sit)- the epitome of a professional hitter but
struggles mightily against Paul Byrd. 1/10, 2 k's.
Orlando Hudson (sit)- can't seem to catch up with any
of the stuff offered by Livan Hernandez. 1/13 with 2 k's.
Studs and Duds: (a recap of yesterday's picks and pans)
Paul Maholm (stream)- W 7ip/3e/10w/1k
Edwin Jackson (stream)- ND 6.1ip/2e/8w/3k
Cliff Floyd (spot)- Oswalt-DNP
Omar Vizquel (spot)- 0/3
Troy Glaus (start)- 2/4, 2 runs, homer, 4 rbi
Joe Crede (start)- 0/3
Derrek Lee (sit)- 2/4, 2 runs, 2 rbi
Kevin Millar (sit)- 0/3

^ -designates an active player on today's roster.
Daily Activity:
PE Gomez(drop)/Olson-Mon
PE Olson(drop)/Rasner-Tues
PE Rasner(drop)/Davis-Wed
PE Davis(drop)/Jurrjens-Fri
PE Jurrjens(drop)/Wolf-Sat
OP Marcum(DL)/Davies-Sat
PE Wolf(drop)/Francis-Sun
Strategy: Jair Jurrjens was dropped for SP Randy Wolf
to try to protect the point for PE in W. OP added Davies
for today after placing Marcum on the DL. OP now has
Verlander, Billingsley and Davies going against Wolf and
Weaver for PE. Morrow was retained as much to keep
him away from Week 13 OP, who grabbed Mike Gonzalez
last week, as much as to have a 5-3 advantage in closers
over next week's OP. Escobar pinch hit last night so there
is a chance that he'll play today otherwise PE could play 1
down on offense today. Wolf was dropped today for Jeff
Francis on Monday. That will give PE 7 roster starts
compared to 5 for Week 13 OP.
Week 13 OP is in 2nd place affording PE an opportunity to
gain significant positional ground. OP features Utley, Josh
Hamilton and Ellsbury for a solid balance of high batting
average with speed and power. The supporting cast is
more of the same with Loney,Victorino, Renteria, Youkilis
and J.D.Drew. OP's SP's have high K, low ERA/WHIP
potential with Hamels, Webb, Lincecum, Oswalt and Myers.
OP has 3 solid closers in Rivera, B.J. Ryan and Mike Gonzalez.
OP will only get a single start from each SP having 5 on the
roster for the week. PE won the Week 2 matchup 5-4.
Game Keys: OP C.C. Sabathia was outstanding allowing 1
run with 6 whip and 10 k's in 7 innings. He did not figure in
the decision. PE stream Jurrjens was solid but Martinez
blew up in the 5th inning allowing 6 runs and 10 whip in 4.1
frames. Neither PE hurler could secure a W. Wood carved
out a save giving PE an insurmountable lead in that category.
OP has a 3-2 advantage in SP's today as PE leads in W's by 2.
ERA/WHIP are still controlled by OP while PE has a 25 K
advantage. PE offense was just good enough to forge ahead
in BA while still maintaining a modest lead in Runs while OP
leads by 1 in HR. OP leads by 5 in RBI with PE ahead by 4
in SB. The match stands at 6-4 for PE with all points in play
except Saves and K's which are controlled by PE.
Final Thoughts:
PE remains in 3rd place 4.5 points out of 1st and 1 out of
2nd place with the regular season half over.
The Player's Edge participates in many leagues but elected to
follow a team in a Public League to better approximate what might
be faced by a wide majority of players that use the Edge daily. This
team plays in a standard 5x5 scoring format and drafted 7th of 12
teams in a 21 round on-line live event in late March. We'll follow this
team throughout the entire 2008 fantasy campaign.
All Done!
