Fantasy Player's Edge

July 18, 2008

Roster Shuffle:

Chris Young's rehab assignment was successful as the big
righthander threw 54 pitches over 3.2 innings with 4 k's.
His command was said to be excellent.

Fausto Carmona will toss a rehab start on Monday that
will be measured at 80 pitches or 5 innings. He could
return next weekend.

Aaron Harang's strained forearm was evaluated yesterday
and it's likely that he'll begin a throwing program that will
allow him to be activated on July 23rd.

Chris Carpenter is progressing and will pitch on Sunday at
Double A Springfield. He could be ready to rejoin the Cards
rotation around Labor Day. It's worth keeping an eye on as
he could be useful to many fantasy owners for the stretch
run.

Pedro Martinez had a Sunday start pushed back as he
received a cortisone shot to accelerate the healing of a
groin strain. If all goes well he'll start on Tuesday vs.
the Phillies.

Andrew Miller made the DL with right knee tendinitis.

Bobby Jenks pitched a scoreless inning at Double A with his
velocity topping 94 mph. He's good to go to be activated
today.

Troy Percival has a chance of being activated by the Rays
sometime this weekend. He threw to live hitters yesterday.

David Ortiz hit a homerun yesterday at Pawtucket.

Carlos Guillen will miss tonight's game against the Orioles as
he spends time with his wife who had complications following
the birth of their daughter. He could miss the entire weekend
set so check the Tigers box score before inserting him in your
lineup.

Chone Figgins was activated from the bereavement list and
should be in the Angels starting lineup tonight.

Xavier Nady will miss tonight's game to be with his wife who
gave birth yesterday. He should return on Saturday.

Todd Helton should begin a rehab assignment soon and could
be back with the Rockies early next week.

Jerry Hairston was placed on the DL with a strained hamstring.

Hank Blalock will return to 3B for the Rangers assuring Chris
Davis a roster spot at 1B.

PE Saito(drop)/Gerut-Wed
PE Gerut(drop)/J. Johnson-Thur
PE Hairston(drop)/Kepppinger-Thur
PE Johnson(drop)/Wellemeyer-Fri

Strategy: PE Hairston was placed on the DL and was used
for Keppinger as insurance for Escobar. PE has to employ an
emergency streaming strategy after Cordero's meltdown. PE
was forced to forego Week 17 strategy so SP Josh Johnson
was dropped for SP stream Wellemeyer and Keppinger will likely
be used for SP Olsen if SS Escobar is playing. PE will send Cain
/Shields and 5 closers vs. OP Maine and 3 closers tonight. PE
hopes to have 2 streamers tomorrow and 1 on Sunday joining
Weaver, to make a play for W's and K's, giving PE 6 starts this
weekend. OP only has 3 starts remaining on the roster. Luckily
the Cordero debacle came on Thursday allowing for a strategy
shift on the fly.

Game Keys: OP had 3 SP's going last night and they combined
for a W, allowing 13 runs and 27 whip in 16.1 innings with 12 k's.
This pedestrian performance has opened the door for PE to play
for W's and K's. PE closers had a save but allowed 4 runs and 6
whip in 1.1 frames. Neither offense generated anything.

Final Thoughts:

PE is in 1st place by 3 points over the 2nd place club and 7 ahead
of the 3rd place team heading into a shortened Week 16 showdown
with a pitching laden OP. PE has gone 26-11-3 over the 1st 4 weeks
of the 2nd half of the season while facing the other top 3 teams in
the league.

The Player's Edge participates in many leagues but elected to
follow a team in a Public League to better approximate what might
be faced by a wide majority of players that use the Edge daily.
This team plays in a standard 5x5 scoring format and drafted 7th
of 12 teams in a 21 round on-line live event in late March. We will
follow this team throughout the entire 2008 fantasy campaign.
