July 4, 2008
Happy 4th of July, be safe and have fun.
Roster Shuffle:
The Dodgers, in response to setbacks by Furcal and an
extended injury to Pierre, are rushing Garciaparra and
Andruw Jones back into service today. Kemp/Ethier
owners will not be impacted until Pierre returns.
Jeff Kent left yesterday's game with stiffness in his back.
Jeff Francoeur may be sent to the minors to regain his
stroke. He's currently in the midst of a 4/34 slump with
0 homers/rbi over his past ten games.
Coco Crisp returned from suspension and went 2/3.
Jason Bartlett was placed on the DL and top prospect
Reid Brignac was brought up to play SS. He's probably
not worth a priority waiver because he'll most likely be
sent back to Triple A when Bartlett returns.
Austin Kearns has recovered from a strained elbow and
returned to the Nationals lineup going 1/4. He is useful
on occasion as a spot play.
Aramis Ramirez returned from the Dominican Republic
and should be in your lineup.
Mark Reynolds had a clean MRI on his wrist after being
hit by a line drive. He's day to day.
Luis Castillo is headed to the DL with a strained hip.
Roy Oswalt's Saturday start has been pushed back a day
or 2 due to a hip strain. Adjust accordingly.
Carlos Zambrano returns to the bump tonight to face the
Cards.
Ian Snell will be activated from the DL and make a start
on Tuesday.
Brett Myers had a 1st start in Triple A. It was a pedestrian
effort with the former Phillies ace going 5.1 innings allowing
3 earned on 7 whip with 6 k's. He should be able to build off
of this outing.
Brad Penny is experiencing command issues and will not be
back on Saturday. He's tentatively expected to return later
next week.
Eric Gagne pitched a scoreless inning of middle relief. Of
note was that Brewers closer Salomon Torres could not
prevent a meltdown of the bullpen as the D-Backs scored
6 in the ninth to beat the Brew Crew 6-5. This could get
interesting.
Joe Borowski's role is being debated by the Indians brain
trust. What could they possibly be discussing? Look for
Kobayashi to be given a chance in the 9th inning.
Streamers: (tomorrow's probable starters available as free agents)
Use these players to gain advantage in wins and strikeouts.
Gavin Floyd- has been a monster at home this year and has
no history vs. Oakland. 6-1, 2.87/.99 with 48 k's in 63 frames
at his house.
Kevin Slowey- has performed admirably since being recalled
by Minnesota. 0-0, 1.80/1.00 in 5 innings vs. Cleveland and
2-3, 3.30/1.00 with 21 k's in 30 frames at the Metrodome.
Spotties: (tomorrow's position players available as free agents)
Use these players to fill in for injured players and on off days.
Mike Cameron- is almost perfect against Maholm. 5/6
with a homer and 3 rbi.
Freddy Sanchez- is a real "Bush"whacker. 7/16 with
2 extras, 5 rbi and a steal vs. the Brewers hurler.
Start/Sit: (today)
Guide to using bench players when matchups are favorable.
Xavier Nady (start)- pounds Sheets unmercifully. 9/17,
5 extras, 3 bombs, 9 rbi and only 1 k.
Aaron Rowand (start)- maintains his AB's on the down-
Lowe vs. the Dodgers righthander. 7/14 with 1 k.
Guide to sit starters when matchups are unfavorable.
Normally sit these players in Roto formats only
Ricky Weeks (sit)- 2 days in a row on the "sit" list
for Rick the Quick. 1/11 against Gorzelanny.
Torii Hunter (sit)- becomes the hunted when facing
Burnett. 1/13 with 7 k's.
Studs and Duds: (a recap of yesterday's picks and pans)
Johnny Cueto (stream)- W 7ip/3e/8w/8k
Manny Parra (stream)- ND 6ip/0e/7w/4k
Wes Helms (spot)- Francis/DL- DNP
Jose Vidro (spot)- 1/5, 2 rbi
Kevin Youkilis (start)- 2/4, run
Placido Polanco (start)- 1/4, rbi
Ricky Weeks (sit)- 0/5
Raul Ibanez (sit)- 2/4, run

^ -designates an active player on today's roster.
Daily Activity:
PE Helton(drop)/Hairston-Mon
OP Kershaw(drop)/Campillo-Tue
OP Campillo(drop)/Slowey-Wed
OP Capps(drop)/Stults-Thurs
Strategy: Ryan Braun sat for a 2nd consecutive game
hindering PE's efforts to gain ground on offense. OP
dropped Capps for SP Stults giving OP 4 starts left for
the contest but none today. PE has 5 remaining starts
with Weaver going today. PE will start Hairston for
Griffey in an effort to increase the lead in SB's. The
match has been distilled to PE's pitching vs. OP's
hitting.
Game Keys: OP Duchscherer pitched a solid game
and secured a W. PE had 2 more saves. PE offense
was dreadful once again going 5/32 with 2 runs and
1 rbi. OP leads by 9 runs, 5 homers, 8 rbi and .52 in
BA. PE holds a 3-1 margin in steals. PE leads every
pitching category but has not, at this point, put any
of them out of OP's grasp. PE heads into the turn
with a 6-4 lead.
Final Thoughts:
PE is in 2nd place .5 point out of 1st heading into a Week
14 meeting with the 3rd place team.
The Player's Edge participates in many leagues but elected
to follow a team in a Public League to better approximate what
might be faced by a wide majority of players that use the Edge
daily. This team plays in a standard 5x5 scoring format and
drafted 7th of 12 teams in a 21 round on-line live event in late
March. We'll follow this team throughout the entire 2008 fantasy
campaign.
