Fantasy Player's Edge

July 27, 2008

Roster Shuffle:

Dustin McGowan will have season ending surgery on
his shoulder. It's safe to replace him on your roster.

Chris Carpenter is scheduled to pitch on Wednesday
against Atlanta. If he's available he's worth a flier.

David Price may be called up soon by the Rays. He's
the real deal and is worth a priority waiver.

Kevin Millwood went on the DL with a strained groin.

Scott Linebrink was added to the DL with an inflamed
right shoulder.

Anibal Sanchez appears ready to return to the Marlins
rotation after a 7 inning, 101 pitch effort in the minors.
Sanchez has good stuff and is worth keeping an eye on.

Aaron Laffey was optioned to make room for Fausto
Carmona.

Alex Rodriguez was hit on the wrist by a pitch and
left yesterday's game against the Red Sox. He's day
to day as the injury is said to be minor.

The enigmatic Manny Ramirez returned to action vs.
the Yankees going 0/4.

Jacoby Ellsbury was given a day off to clear his head as
the speedster has been struggling of late.

Casey Blake was traded to the Dodgers but his fantasy
value remains marginal.

Carlos Gomez will sit out today as well with a bruised
tailbone.

Streamers: (tomorrow's probable starters available as free agents)

Use these players to gain advantage in wins and strikeouts.

Hiroki Kuroda- has no history vs. the Giants but has been very
good at Dodger Stadium. 3-0, 2.63/.97 in 55 innings at home.

Paul Byrd- has been disappointing this year but has had good
luck against the Tigers historically. 9-2, 3.54/1.17 in 122 frames.

Spotties: (tomorrow's position players available as free agents)

Use these players to fill in for injured players and on off days.

Willy Taveras- hits and steals against Ian Snell. 8/15 with 3 sb's.

Craig Monroe- wears Buehrle out. 14/38, 4 extras with 2 homers.

Start/Sit: (today)

Guide to using bench players when matchups are favorable.

Randy Winn (start)- has great swings vs. Hall of Famer
Randy Johnson. 9/24, a homer, 5 rbi and 5 steals.

Carlos Delgado (start)- tags Lohse frequently. 7/15 with
a big fly.

Guide to sit starters when matchups are unfavorable.

Normally sit these players in Roto formats only

Ryan Ludwick(sit)- will probably sit vs. Johan Santana. 2/11
with 6 k's.

Kaz Matsui (sit)- has no answer for Suppan's stuff. 2/12, 3 k's.

Strategy: PE stream Bush was used for SP Nick Blackburn to
make a last ditch effort to earn the WHIP point. Essentially this
is a meaningless play unless OP Park or Lyon blow up today. PE
has begun a streaming strategy for Week 18 with the selection
of SP Hiroki Kuroda. Blackburn was dropped to make room on
the roster. As a matter of housekeeping Carpenter was swapped
with Wood on the DL as Carpenter is scheduled to make a start
on Wednesday and Wood, even if activated on Tuesday, will not
be needed to secure the point in Saves (see Week 18 below).

Week 18 OP is in last place and is inactive. The offense is solid
featuring Miguel Cabrera, Crawford, Rios, Pence, Atkins, Tejada
and Pedroia so there is a blend of power and speed. OP's active
pitching is lean with Burnett, Mussina and Garland occupying
active roster spots with Lackey and Vazquez on the bench and
Penny and Wang on the DL. OP has set up men Gagne and Bell
as RP's. OP only has 5 starts on the roster unless the bench SP's
are utilized.

Game Keys: PE's offense was sputtering yesterday going 7/31
allowing OP with a 10/29 to take control of BA. PE did manage
12 rbi to tie the category. Every offensive point remains in play
with the possible exception of HR where PE leads by 4. All of the
pitching categories have been decided with PE winning W, Saves
and K and OP securing ERA/WHIP. Sunday's finale is virtually
even although PE is nursing a 6-3 lead. PE leads by only 2 in SB
and Runs while OP leads in BA by .10 with RBI tied.

Final Thoughts:

PE increased the 1st place lead to 5.5 points over the 2nd place
club and 8 ahead of the 3rd place team after a shortened Week
16 took it's toll on all the top teams.

The Player's Edge participates in many leagues but elected to
follow a team in a Public League to better approximate what might
be faced by a wide majority of players that use the Edge daily.
This team plays in a standard 5x5 scoring format and drafted 7th
of 12 teams in a 21 round on-line live event in late March. We will
follow this team throughout the entire 2008 fantasy campaign.
