Fantasy Player's Edge

July 9, 2008

Roster Shuffle:

Paul Konerko was activated from the DL and inserted in
the White Sox starting lineup going 1/3 with an rbi.

Magglio Ordonez will return next week from the DL.

D-Back's manager Bob Melvin does not expect Eric Byrnes
to return this season. It's probably time to cut your losses
and move on.

Ryan Church's tests for post concussion syndrome were
negative but he was added to the DL anyway.

Brandon Inge began a rehab assignment and should be
back right after the All Star break. His only value is at C.

Rich Harden has been traded to the Cubs. Ostensibly,
his value increases in the National League and with
Chicago's offense. It's mandatory that Harden and
"stays healthy" are mentioned in the same sentence
as a preface to this deal.

Erik Bedard is out until after the All Star break and King
Felix Hernandez will take a turn on Friday rather than
Thursday for the Mariners.

Brett Myers has found his groove in the minors allowing
2 earned in 7.1 innings while striking out 6 in Triple A.
If you cut him, you might want to reacquire Myers for
a push after the All Star break.

Dustin McGowan is experiencing shoulder stiffness and
will undergo an MRI today.

Fausto Carmona threw a side session on Monday and is
progressing towards a rehab assignment. He could return
right after the break.

Bobby Jenks was placed on the DL retroactive to June
30th. He'll be eligible to return immediately after the
All Star break.

Troy Percival is much improved and may be activated on
July 18th.

Adam Wainwright will begin a throwing program this week
although no timetable has been set for his return.

Chris Carpenter threw a simulated game of about 60 pitches.
He will stretch out to 80-90 pitches in his next session and
may be able to begin a rehab assignment at the end of the
month. He could return to the Cards rotation shortly thereafter.
There's no way to speculate on his effectiveness. If you have
roster space he's certainly worth a flier on past performance.

695. That's the number of innings used that would keep you
on track to deploy maximum innings (1250) over the course
of the season in Rotisserie. A number significantly above or
below should be a call to action.

Streamers: (tomorrow's probable starters available as free agents)

Use these players to gain advantage in wins and strikeouts.

Kevin Slowey- has had success against the Tigers during his
brief career. 2-0, 3.00/1.42 in 12 frames vs. Detroit and 3-3,
3.59/1.05 in 43 road innings this season.

Greg Smith- has no history against the Mariners but has done
his best work at home. 2-3, 3.30/1.26 with 30 k's in 44 innings
at the McAfee Coliseum. As a bonus, his opponent R.A. Dickey
is 0-4 vs. Oakland.

Spotties: (tomorrow's position players available as free agents)

Use these players to fill in for injured players and on off days.

Geoff Jenkins-is positively loopy over facing Looper. 7/16 with an
extra base hit.

Mark DeRosa- facing Arroyo is like playing T-ball for this guy. 7/14,
with a homer.

^ -designates an active player on today's roster.

Daily Activity:

-none-

Strategy: PE sends SP Weaver tonight which will give both teams
3 starts week to date with 5 remaining on each roster. A classic knee
jerk reaction to OP's effective pitching performance yesterday is to
begin streaming immediately. Prudently, PE will let Weaver's start
play out this evening and evaluate subsequent strategy thereafter.
It's likely, however, that streaming will be necessary to make a run
at W's and K's. The only question is when to begin and whether to
use Hairston, Martinez or both to facilitate the process.

Game Keys: OP had 3 SP's on the bump yesterday. They combined
with 1 reliever for a W, a save, allowing 8 earned on 25 whip with 20
k's over 20.1 innings. PE Harang was absolutely dismal again getting
raked for 6 earned on 12 whip in 4.1 frames costing PE the early lead
in ERA/WHIP. Both offenses are hitting below the Mendoza line but
PE batters managed 9 rbi and 2 homers on only 4 hits last night. OP
leads 6-2 heading in Wednesday.

Final Thoughts:

PE is in 1st place by .5 point over the 2nd place club and 4.5
ahead of the 3rd place team heading into a Week 15 meeting
with the 4th place team.

The Player's Edge participates in many leagues but elected
to follow a team in a Public League to better approximate what
might be faced by a wide majority of players that use the Edge
daily. This team plays in a standard 5x5 scoring format and
drafted 7th of 12 teams in a 21 round on-line live event in late
March. We'll follow this team throughout the entire 2008 fantasy
campaign.
