Fantasy Player's Edge

August 6, 2008

Roster Shuffle:

David Ortiz
tweaked his left wrist on the last AB of the
night on Monday. He played last night and went 1/5.

Carl Crawford was out again with a sore hamstring and
may not return until tomorrow.

Mike Lowell returned to action last night going 0/4.

Milton Bradley sat out again but was available to pinch
hit. He's day to day.

Rick Ankiel is still relegated to pinch hitting as he deals
with an abdominal strain. He's expected to miss his 10th
straight game today.

Joe Crede had a setback in his rehab assignment that
will cause him to be shutdown for several days. They're
calling it a pinched nerve in his back.

Perennial spot play Jose Vidro has been cut by Seattle.

Miguel Olivo is appealing the 5 game suspension he was
given for charging the mound after being hit by a pitch.

Gio Gonzalez will make his major league debut today
for Oakland vs. the Blue Jays in Toronto. He struck out
128 batters in 123 innings in the minors.

Tom Glavine had a 4 inning rehab start allowing only
1 earned run. He's scheduled for one more minor league
appearance before rejoining the Braves rotation. He may
be useful for the stretch run and playoffs.

Adam Wainwright threw a 35 pitch simulated game
and is scheduled for a rehab assignment on Saturday.
He could return to the Cards rotation on the 14th vs.
the Marlins.

Oliver Perez had his next start moved up to Friday to
fill in for John Maine. He'll be working on 4 days rest.

Brandon Morrow was sent to the minors to stretch out
and return to the Mariners as a starter. J.J. Putz will
shoulder the closing load for Seattle.

Joba Chamberlain is to visit Dr. Andrews today after
his MRI yesterday. Typically a visit to Birmingham to
see Andrews is not a good thing. Ian Kennedy will take
his turn in the rotation.

Zach Greinke was suspended for 5 games for hitting
Nick Swisher after a warning was issued. He'll make his
next start as he's already appealed the suspension.

Kerry Wood was activated and should reprise his closer
role after yesterday's set-up appearance.

Joel Zumaya has been anointed the Tigers latest closer
du jour. He promptly blew a save chance last night.

Eddie Guardado has been named interim closer while
C.J. Wilson works through mechanical problems with
his delivery. Everyday Eddie's worth a flier if you're
save poor as he recorded a save yesterday.

Billy Wagner was placed on the DL with a strained left
forearm. Look for Eddie Kunz or Duaner Sanchez to
close in his absence as Heilman has already failed in the
role when called upon last night.

^ -designates an active player on today's roster.

Daily Activity:

OP open spot/Zito- Mon
PE Morrow(drop)/Wood(activated-DL)-Tues
PE Harang(DL)/Renteria-Wed

Strategy: Neither club has an active SP today but PE is clearly
in a compromising position due to Harden's first subpar outing
since joining the Cubs. Carpenter saved the day for PE with a
solid performance but ERA/WHIP are very much in play. PE
will continue to utilize the pitching roster but will evaluate daily
whether all or some of the closers and SP'S will be activated. PE
Harang was added to the DL for Edgar Renteria as a spot play
on offense Thursday. Kerry Wood was activated today using
Morrow who was optioned to the minors to work on becoming
a starter.

Game Keys: PE SP's Harden/Carpenter and Putz combined
to allow 4 runs on 16 whip over 12 innings effectively keeping
ERA/WHIP in play. OP SP's combined for 1 W allowing 11 runs
on 28 whip over 15.2 innings. OP controls K and is currently
tied in W but still has 11 starts remaining on the roster. There
are no SP's going for either side today. OP's potent offense had
a stellar day going 16/39 with 8 runs, 4 homers and 10 rbi. PE
limped along at 9/39 with 4 runs, a homer, 5 rbi and a swipe.
OP has the early lead in the match at 4-3.

Final Thoughts:

PE increased the 1st place lead to 11 points over the 2nd place
club and 14.5 ahead of the 3rd place team heading into Week 19.
There are only 40 points (4 weeks) left in the season so PE needs
to focus on playing consistently to assure a playoff bye.

The Player's Edge participates in many leagues but elected to
follow a team in a Public League to better approximate what might
be faced by a wide majority of players that use the Edge daily.
This team plays in a standard 5x5 scoring format and drafted 7th
of 12 teams in a 21 round on-line live event in late March. We will
follow this team throughout the entire 2008 fantasy campaign.
