Fantasy Player's Edge

August 9, 2008

Fantasy Football Player's Edge coming soon!!

Roster Shuffle:

Takashi Saito
began a throwing program yesterday
and could throw from a mound later next week. If all
goes according to plan Saito could return by Labor Day.

Jonathan Broxton has been outstanding filling in as
the Dodgers closer but it's likely that he'll set-up Saito
and become the Dodgers closer in 2009.

Aaron Harang will be activated and start for the Reds
tomorrow. Edinson Volquez was bumped until Tuesday.

John Maine had a successful bullpen session where he
threw all of his pitches. He should return on Wednesday.

Matt Capps will pitch in Triple A on Tuesday and is
getting very close to being recalled by the Pirates.

Erik Bedard is feeling better and there's an outside
chance that he could be back in the Mariners rotation
by the end of the month.

Joba Chamberlain may begin a throwing program
next week which could have him back in the bigs by
early September.

Chipper Jones returned to action right where he
left off going 2/4 with 3 runs, a homer and 2 rbi.

Rick Ankiel is slated to be in the Cardinals starting
lineup today. Be sure to check the Cards box before
starting him.

Evan Longoria was hit on the wrist by a J.J Putz
fastball on Thursday. X-rays came back negative.
The team did not indicate when he will be ready to
return to action as he was on the bench last night.

Travis Hafner's shoulder is gaining strength and
he may be cleared to take BP by the end of next
week.

Carlos Guillen was forced out of last night's game
with back spasms. It's likely that he'll miss a game
or 2 so adjust accordingly but verify his absence
before benching him.

Jerry Hairston Jr. is close to returning from a sore
hamstring. He's now day to day.

Nomar Garciaparra is expected to be activated on
Tuesday when he's eligible to come off the DL. He's a
nice plug-in at SS if he can stay healthy.

PE Harang(DL)/Renteria-Wed
OP Zito(drop)/Cruz-Wed
PE Renteria(drop)/Wolf-Thur
PE Wolf(drop)/Harang(act/DL)-Fri

Strategy: The pitching strategy die has been cast for the
remainder of this week as PE and OP SP's will match start
for start. Yesterday's pitching action favored PE but nothing
has been decided except for Saves and K's. The ideal scenario
would have PE SP Liriano winning today with OP SP's Haren/
Cook coming up empty which would allow PE to sit all pitchers
on Sunday. On offense PE is at risk to lose all 5 points unless
the group increases productivity over the weekend.

Game Keys: PE SP's Shields/Weaver/Wolf combined to earn
2 W's. PE pitching, including 2 closers, allowed 12 earned on
28 whip with 15 K's in 20 innings. PE benched CL Cordero to
open an active pitching spot for Wolf and avoided another blow
up from the Reds closer. OP SP's Maholm/Lilly pitched very
well but neither could register a W. They did allow OP to close
the gap appreciably in ERA/WHIP by only yielding 2 runs and
17 whip with 14 k's in 14.1 innings. OP has salted away K's with
a lead of 13 and one start in hand. PE will send Liriano to square
off against OP SP's Haren/Cook trying to protect a 3 W lead. PE
offense took the lead in Runs by 2 but OP, on a steal by Holliday,
opened a margin of 1 in SB. The match turns onto the river tied
at 5-5. Saves (PE) and HR/BA/K (OP) have been decided.

Final Thoughts:

PE increased the 1st place lead to 11 points over the 2nd place
club and 14.5 ahead of the 3rd place team heading into Week 19.
There are only 40 points (4 weeks) left in the season so PE needs
to focus on playing consistently to assure a playoff bye.

The Player's Edge participates in many leagues but elected to
follow a team in a Public League to better approximate what might
be faced by a wide majority of players that use the Edge daily.
This team plays in a standard 5x5 scoring format and drafted 7th
of 12 teams in a 21 round on-line live event in late March. We will
follow this team throughout the entire 2008 fantasy campaign.
