Fantasy Player's Edge

August 11, 2008

Fantasy Football Player's Edge coming soon!!

Roster Shuffle:

Orlando Hudson
suffered a broken wrist and may
be lost for the season. You'll need to adjust at 2B as
it's likely that he will not return.

Vernon Wells was activated by the Blue Jays and
started at DH going 0/4.

Ryan Braun sat out yesterday's game after suffering
lower back tightness on Saturday night. It appears
from all accounts that he will miss a few games while
being listed as day to day.

Evan Longoria missed another outing with a bruised
right wrist. He's expected to return on Tuesday.

Rick Ankiel is ready to return today but the Edge
will believe it when his name is on the Cards lineup
card.

Jerry Hairston Jr. is still not ready as Dusty Baker
is hopeful that he'll return on Tuesday vs. the Pirates.

Carl Crawford landed on the DL with a problem with
a tendon in his right middle finger. He'll be examined
today.

Rocco Baldelli was a surprise activation by the Rays.
He started in right field and went 1/4 with an rbi. Keep
an eye on Maddon to see how he uses Rocco. Baldelli
is a good player if he gets enough PT.

Scott Rolen is headed to the DL with a sore shoulder.

Chris Carpenter strained his right tricep and left the
game vs. the Cubs in the 6th inning. Additional details
regarding the severity of this injury should be available
today.

Bartolo Colon had his 2nd rehab outing at Triple A
Pawtucket as he tries to regain his form. If he can get
it right on the bump he could provide value in fantasy
rotation's down the stretch.

Tim Wakefield is being placed on the DL with a sore
shoulder.

Ryan Madsen had the save for the Phillies yesterday
as Brad Lidge was unavailable due to an oddly termed
"sluggish" shoulder. It might be advisable to handcuff
Madsen until more is known about Lidge's condition.

SP's Martinez, Carmona, Verlander, Lincecum,
Marcum, Beckett, Volquez, Harden, J.Santana,
Lohse, Mussina, Oswalt, Vazquez, R. Johnson,
Kazmir, Hamels, Garland
and Volstad are the likely
candidates for 2 starts this week. (SP's normally start on
every 5th day so starters on Monday/Tuesday are likely
to pitch on Saturday/Sunday respectively.)

SP stream possibilities for 2 starts this week; Karstens,
Bush, A. Sanchez, Backe and Kershaw. Probables
are
chosen based on having a favorable start on Monday
or Tuesday.

907. That's the number of innings used that would
keep you on track to deploy maximum innings (1250)
over the course of the season in Rotisserie. A number
significantly above or below should be a call to action.

4 rbi.

Mussina.

^ -designates an active player on today's roster.

Daily Activity:

Strategy: PE does not have a flex spot on the active roster
choosing to go with 7 SP's, 5 closers and 9 on offense. The
objective is to earn a 1st round bye for the playoffs. PE will
probably carry only 4 closers in the playoffs but would like
the luxury of making any roster adjustments while on a bye
week. PE will simply play the active roster this week on both
sides of the equation looking to earn 5 or more points. OP
has 2 closers active today vs. PE Broxton and 6 potential
hitters on offense against only 5 for PE. Both clubs have 7
starts on the current roster but OP does have 2 open roster
spots due to dropping a couple of players on the DL. OP
would be wise to add SP's on Monday or Tuesday which,
in effect, would provide 4 extra starts. PE hopes that Braun
returns from back spasms and has to make a decision on OF
Griffey who looks to be in a platoon situation with the ChiSox.
It's going to be very difficult to play passively but it's all about
the big picture.

Game Keys: OP's SP trio of Saunders/Parra/Pelfrey were
sufficiently mediocre allowing WHIP to remain with PE. OP's
bats were blazing going 16/38 but a shorthanded PE held on
to Runs/SB. The decision to sit all pitching was instrumental
in the final outcome as PE Harang/Cain/Fuentes allowed 24
whip in 11.2 innings. The seesaw contest went to PE 6-4.

Final Thoughts:

PE increased the 1st place lead to 11 points over the 2nd place
club and 15.5 ahead of the 3rd place team heading into Week 20.
With only 30 points (3 weeks) left in the season PE will adopt a
conservative strategy to try to assure roster integrity heading
into the bye week of the playoffs. If PE goes 10-20 during these
final 3 weeks the 3rd place team would need to go 25-4-1 to tie
for 2nd place.

The Player's Edge participates in many leagues but elected to
follow a team in a Public League to better approximate what might
be faced by a wide majority of players that use the Edge daily.
This team plays in a standard 5x5 scoring format and drafted 7th
of 12 teams in a 21 round on-line live event in late March. We will
follow this team throughout the entire 2008 fantasy campaign.
